John Bothwell

4th XV Coach

John Bothwell

John is an academic in Durham’s Biosciences Dept, a past Director of the Durham Energy Institute, a current Director of the Centre for Sustainable Law and Policy, a lead on the University’s Just Transitions to Net Zero initiative, a creator of the UK University sector’s Early Career Researcher guidelines and the author of popular science books for Princeton University Press.

In his misspent youth, however, John won an Oxford rugby blue in the 1996 Varsity Match at Twickenham, toured Canada, Japan, Australia and South Africa, and coached the Oxford Women’s rugby team to the 1999 BUSA championship. John also propped for Plymouth Albion in the early 2000s during their then-record run of English League victories that saw them promoted to the Championship. He once pushed a Springbok prop back off their own scrum ball and rarely misses a chance to talk about it.

John is deaf (congenitally; it wasn’t the rugby) and, like any good prop should be, is fond of cats and cake.
