DURFC 2nd XV vs Birmingham 1st XV
The 2s took on Birmingham last Wednesday in very wet, cold and muddy conditions down at the race course. Birmingham took the lead after building good early phases resulting in a try under the posts which was converted to put them 7-0 up. However the mighty twos quickly responded through a well worked try which was finished off by Lineen and converted by Ciaran. The Durham forwards dominated the opposing pack and this really showed in our second try as an extremely powerful scrum lead to us turning over the ball on their feed and walking them over the line to allow Hugo Tasker to dot down for an easy try. This made the score 12-7 to Durham.
Despite Durham’s forward dominance, Birmingham’s backs showed what they were capable of after a very flare cross field kick resulted in them scoring in the corner to level the scores. Birmingham’s backs continued to impress, with them breaking down the left wing to score again, this time the conversion was slotted to give them a 7 point lead. Straight from the kick off Durham were awarded a penalty and chose to kick for goal which was done successfully to make the score 19-15 going into half time.
Birmingham continued where they left off early in the second half when they expertly read the Durham back line to intercept and break free. Jamie Adamson’s best attempts weren’t quite enough as they got the offload away to dot down under the posts making it 26-15. Now it was Durham’s turn to intercept as Woollatt grasped the ball out the air and shows his pace to run in from our own 22. After some slick handling by the Durham backs in awful conditions the ball ended up with winger Woollatt again who showed a tremendous turn of speed to easily pass his opposite number and break free, he then offloaded the ball to Miles Peters to bring up our 4th try and also to regain the lead by a singular point. 27-26 to Durham.
However Birmingham didn’t let their heads drop and came out fighting from the kick off. A great bit of sniping from their 9 allowed him to break through and unfortunately a great cover tackle from Josh Wright wasn’t quite enough to keep them out as they scored a few phases later – 31-27. A bit of ill discipline gifted Birmingham an easy 3 points to further increase their lead. Durham built a lot of pressure on the oppositions try line, going through their phases nicely. However they mamaged to turn us over but their attempt to exit was brilliantly charged down by super sub Anthony Morris allowing Mallinson to fall on the ball to score which was converted again by Ciaran in high pressure circumstances to level the game at 34-34. Durham seemed to switch off a bit and after a mix up from the kick off Birmingham ended up with a scrum 5 meters out which lead to a try and giving them a 7 point lead with only 3 mins to go. Late pressure from Durham and a brilliant driving mall unfortunately was held up in very controversial circumstances meaning that Birmingham take the win in a thrilling contest. Final score, 41- 34.
