DURFC 2nd XV vs Leeds University 1st XV

November 5, 2018

Early pressure from Leeds combined with a few errors from Durham resulted in an attacking line out 10 metres out. Solid D from Gleave combined with a turnover by Haig doesn’t allow Leeds to convert their territory into a try. Ciaran relieves pressure with a kick to touch. After a few phases, edging Durham into Leeds’ half, the ball is zipped along the line and Woolatt makes a great individual effort skimming his opposite man on the outside to score the first try of the game. Not long after, Durham’s pressure in D causes Leeds to throw a risky off load which was intercepted by Jake DeGlanville, followed by a 50m run to put Durham in the corner for their second try.

The momentum built approaching half time and Durham saw a bit more possession, Leeds’ defence were pushed back. A penalty followed by a kick to the corner set Durham up for inevitably what was going to be another try. A sharp lineout and a maul got Durham going forward. With only 5m to go, Durham’s forwards stepped up to carry. After the 3rd phase, Jamie Adamson manages to make it over the line to score Durham’s third try just before half time putting them in a good attacking position for the second half.

With Durham leading 21-0, the second half kicked off. After an unlucky interception just inside Durham’s half, Leeds scored under the sticks. However this did not knock Durham’s momentum and they quickly attacked Leeds’ line, building the phases which resulted in a try for Harri Guy. Not long after, Leeds suffered from the pace from Woolat who ran in his second try of the game making the score 33-7. Leeds are again pushed back by Durham’s threatening attack and after Gleave runs a simple line to scythe through the Leeds backline, Lineen races over after a 2 on 1 with the full back.

Leeds’ chance to stay in the game was long gone however they battled out to score their second try of the game after a lot of phases. This was not enough to rock Durham as they quickly responded with some ‘joue’, taking the team to Leeds’ 5 metre line. A couple of unsuccessful attempts at scoring were finally mended with a 3 man miss-pass from Morgan James to put Cam Gleave into the corner finishing the game off at 45-14 to Durham. Another successful week for the mighty 2s at the racecourse, correcting the errors from the uncharacteristic performance in the previous game. Onto next week...
