The 4’s came into this week’s clash against Newcastle 2’s with high hopes and a lot to prove after a slick training session on Monday night and an upsetting loss against Dundee 1’s last week.
Durham started the match with promise winning a penalty after a series of sharp plays which Tom Huckle quickly converted into a 3 point lead for Durham. Unfortunately though, a strong carry off the back of a scrum by the Newcastle number 8 led to their first points of the game, 7-3 to Newcastle. After some strong front up play from Moses and good running lines from the backs, Durham looked dangerous. Then a good kick to touch from a Newcastle penalty and strong maul gave Newcastle an extra 5 points. Before the end of the half Durham conceded another 10 to leave the score at 22-3.
The second half started much like the first. Durham played a lot of ball in the Newcastle 22 and were in with a chance of scoring on many occasions. Unfortunately, difficulties in the lineouts continually cost us possession and it took a while before a tap and go penalty was scored by Moses. 22-10.
A turnover at the scrum and a couple of missed tackles gifted Newcastle a try in the corner taking the score to 29-10. As the game drew to a close Durham found breaks in play and started to make ground into the Newcastle half, however unfortunately inaccuracies meant we were unable to convert our efforts into points leaving the final score at 29-10.
Next week we play Liverpool 1stXV at home. Hopefully some good training sessions means we can bounce back and secure the win next Wednesday.
