DURFC 3rd XV vs Leeds Beckett 2nd XV

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon both of these two sides kicked off their seasons in the BUCS league. Leeds Beckett came out stronger with more physicality and size; and they put some pressure on early. This eventually paid off with an early try making the score 0-7. This seemed to awaken the Durham side, suddenly they were fronting up and putting in some hits; the forwards stood their ground while the backs began to run riot with some lovely “Joue” rugby. An equaliser from Miles Peters following some lovely team play put Durham back in it, beautifully converted by Sam Cavin. Following this blow to Beckett, Durham were determined, some more flair from the backs led to a try by David Spriggens.

It was then the turn of the forwards to get on the scoresheet and get some more unanswered tries for DURFC. After large amounts of possession Ben Harrington used his strength to get himself over the whitewash with a defender on his back; once again converted by Sam Cavin. This sent Durham into the halftime break as leaders at 19-7.

Durham made a strong start to the second half as Jacob Lineen caught Beckett on the counter after a handling error and used his pace and footballing skill to make a 60 meter break, only to be brought down 5 meters from the line; but some lovely support play from Tom Hollidge got Durham another try. Sam Cavin confidently slotted the conversion making the scoreline 26-7. The tables then began to turn once again as Beckett seemed riled up for the comeback. Their forwards began to show their size advantage as Durham appeared to think the game was won. A large spell of Beckett possession and pressure was being held out by some great defence by Durham on their own line until their big number 7 managed to muscle his way over the line. This was a good wake up call for Durham though, as the score now stood at 26-12, that the game was not yet over. Durham once again rose to the occasion and a well earned penalty put Durham 17 points ahead of the visitors as Sam Cabin secured the 3 points with his boot.

As the game was drawing to a close Leeds Beckett heads began to drop and David Spriggens went over for his second; converted again by Sam Cavin. And as fitness began to show Jacob Lineen went careering over the line to cap off an excellent game, followed by another 2 points from Sam Cavin. This made the scoreline 43-12, which is how it remained until the final whistle was blown.

A cracking start to their BUCS league campaign for 2018/19 from the Durham 3rd XV, and let’s hope they can continue their form into next week.
