Durham kick off with great intensity, showing power in the first scrum and retaining the ball well. However, soon some quick pick and go phases ended with a converted try from Newcastle. 0-7. This was shortly followed by another quick try to make the score 0-12. Durham needed points on the board, so a penalty and a lovely chip-chase try from Pete Morris got the ball rolling. 8-12. The wind was in Newcastle’s favour which meant they were able to make good ground from penalties, putting them within scoring distance multiple times. A sly short line out with a catch and drive left the half time score at 8-19 to Newcastle.
The second half kicks off with more intensity than the first, and soon David Spriggens makes a break for the line. 15-19. Injuries from both sides start to multiply with Newcastle having the worst of it, even reaching the point where uncontested scrums were necessary. This created some confusion. The Newcastle forwards were strong, driving Durham back a few times but they hung on, showing great passion. Finally, after many failed attempts at the line, a score! Try by Owen MacCuish, converted to win the game. Final score: 22-19 win for the 4s
