DURFC 3rd XV v.s Strathclyde 1st XV

February 2, 2018

The 3rd XV travelled up to Glasgow to take on Strathclyde 1st XV on a cold, wet day. Despite having a short and sharp warm up, Durham had a slow start which led to an early penalty and then an unfortunate early try down the wing by Strathclyde within the first 10 minutes. Following this, Durham got into the game with some brilliant scrummaging by the front 3, with a special mention to Toby Woods for pushing back some large units. Following from that it was a tough contest throughout the first half against a very physical and large Strathclyde forward pack. Some great carries by George Wheadon and skipper Cam Coulson led to Durham pressing Strathclyde in their 22, but unfortunately Harri Guy had his try held up over the line. Pressing on from this, Durham saw countless attacks at Strathclyde's try line, with a strong pick by Aidan Swain just before half time from the base of the scrum but was knocked on just before the line. This led to Durham being down 15-0 by half time. The second half saw a stronger performance, with Mike Woolatt making a strong performance off the bench with some dancing feet. Some good runs by Ciaran Armstrong and Will Fordy helped gain yards down the pitch. Off the line out Durham looked strong pressing on Strathclyde's try line, which led to Cam Coulson charging over the try line with a strong pick and go to score Durham's first try of the game, topped by a lovely conversion by Ciaran Armstrong to add the extra 2. Strathclyde pressed back after this, with a strong attack, but was faced with a powerful Durham defence, with Fergus Haig making tackles all over the pitch. However, Strathclyde did press back with some good runs to score again, making it 22-7. Some lovely hands by Alex Brown led to Woolatt running down the wing and bagging Durham's second try of the game. 60 minutes in the Durham bench started to come on and make some strong performances, with Rordan Daws and Tony Hackett running nice lines and making good yards. However, Strathclyde continued to challenge the strong Durham defence, which led to a 4th try late in the game, giving them the 29-12 win that Durham felt very hard done by to loose despite a solid effort.
