DURFC 4th XV vs Sheffield Hallam
The fourth team travelled down to Sheffield on Wednesday evening for the first floodlight game of the season. After a series of disappointing defeats, a win seemed vital and a win it was. A good warm up led to a sharp start to the game. After 10 minutes, Josh Perry broke the line, before passing to Cavin, who would put Will Wright under the posts, 7-0. Shortly after however, following some poor discipline a strong Hallam maul led to an unconverted try in the corner. Durham responded well, after Ed Culliney spotted weaknesses in the fringes he powered through one defender and strode over for Durham to take a 14-5 lead. The forwards were then rewarded for their hard work and dominance, winning a penalty try after a scrum on Hallam’s five metre line, special mention to the Durham props, Toby Woods and Alex Nikolatos. After the break, a textbook Yankee secured the bonus point for Durham before another Sam Cavin kick extended the score to 31-5. Despite the strong lead, Hallam fought back, scoring in the corner after a poor Durham box-kick. However, making up for his error, Corry shortly went under the posts twice, followed by Sprigins only minutes later. The score, 52-10. Despite one more try from Hallam leaving the score 52-17, a strong Durham performance- next week they travel to Strathclyde in the cup.
