Last Wednesday the Racecourse hosted a much anticipated fixture between Durham 2nd XV and Nottingham 1st XV, who sat at 2nd in the table. The boys in palatinate got off to a great start scoring an early try through some great interlinking team play. This was to foreshadow the first quarter of the game with strong carries from the forwards and good organisation from the backs. Durham 2nd XV soon found themselves 2 tries up after a soaring miss pass from flyhallf Paddy McDuell put left wing Jake DeGlanville in the corner. However, a side as strong a Nottingham were not going to be kept at bay for long and soon hit back with a length of the pitch try bringing the scores to 10-10. Durham 2’s managed to grab another score before half time after a length of the pitch great interplay between left wing and full back put Delahunty over the line. Half time score 15-10 to Durham. The start of the 2nd half brought about a change in momentum in the game, after two yellow cards for Hugo Chambre and Jack Statham within 2 minutes left Durham with 13 men 5 metres of their own line. For the first time in the game Nottingham took the lead after they took advantage of their numerical advantage and scrummaged their way over the try line. However, Kermit winning the ball of the kick off set the 2nd XV in motion, and it wasn’t long before they were over the whitewash (despite playing with 13 men). Durham were once again in the lead at 20-17 and had momentum on their side. Once they had 15 men again, it wasn’t long before Durham were over again. This time a touchline conversion put the game just out or reach for Nottingham. In the last moments of game, some resolute defence from all 15 Durham players led to Nottingham dropping the ball on their line, on which Delahunty pounced. Full time Durham 2nd XV 32—17 Nottingham 1st XV.
