Last Wednesday saw a typically tough fixture of Durham 2’s taking on Birmingham 1’s away. The boys in Palatinate got off to a tricky start when our 10, Paddy McDuell, was yellow carded 5 minutes after the start of play. Despite the boys digging in early, we couldn’t help but concede a run-away try and penalty whilst we were a man down. We continued to attack hard in the first half with strong carries from centre Miles Rawstron – Rudd and second row Henry Paremain. Despite attacking in their 22 on a few occasions, we couldn’t get any points and Birmingham soon scored another, leading 15 – 0. The boys stepped up in the second half and gave it everything, lead from the front by captain Scott Bowerman. We soon got some points from a driving maul 5m out. The forwards continued dominating, especially at the scrum, this helped Chris Johnston score under the posts from a number 8 pick up. Johnston was our man of the match after strong carries all game, however flanker Alistair Broughton also deserves a mention for his work rate and ball carrying off 10. We showed real grit and determination right up to the final whistle but unfortunately the 2’s suffered a 22-15 loss, it will undoubtedly be a different result when Birmingham make the long journey up to Durham.
