Durham University 1stXV vs. Exeter University 1stXV – 13th October 2017

Match Report

Inspired effort from Durham who came away with a loss: Score: 22 - 36

After getting the season to a terrific start with a 33-0 win against Bath, Durham were looking to carry this form into their next game against Exeter. Swapping Durham City for Rosslyn Park, the team sought out a victory against a well-drilled Exeter side in front of a lively alumni audience.

The game started well for Durham, putting together consistent phase play. Exeter managed to convert a penalty early on, but two tries in three minutes from Devine and Norman left Durham 12-3 up midway into the first half.

Unfortunately for Durham, this was when Exeter started to hit their stride, with three converted tries sending the visitors into the lead at 12-24, just at the stroke of halftime. Exeter would continue to put the pressure on, scoring an additional 2 tries leaving the score at 12-36 by the 50th minute.

It looked as though the game was over for Durham with 30 minutes still left to play, but Alex Keay’s men had other ideas.

Clegg went close following Pieterse’s try but the hosts finally got their game together and their replacements off the bench gave them fresh impetus. Wyman and Hardman both went over to set-up an intriguing last 10 minutes, but despite Durham being in the ascendency, Exeter stood strong in defence to seal the win at 22-36.

The club would like to send our thanks to all the current members who travelled down to support and help set up the game. In particular, we also send our special thanks to the alumni who came to watch and support the team, whose presence truly made the night a success.
