Durham arrived at the BUCS Rugby Sevens Championship with a team well prepared under the captaincy of Ali Neden, and hungry for success in a tournament with strong competition. In a tough group B the Durham side exhibited their desires with big wins over Newcastle and Leeds Universities, and despite suffering a loss at the hands of an impressive Cardiff Met side, went through to the Cup quarter finals of the championships. There they met group C winners Cardiff University, and here Durham stepped up to play some of their best rugby of the tournament, resulting in a 38-12 win. In the semi-finals Durham played last year’s winners Bath University in horrendous hail storm conditions, which reflected in the play. It was only a last play George Trick try which placed Durham in the final of the competition by a score of 21-15. In the final, Durham reencountered the Cardiff Met side which had beaten them in the group, and despite the hunger of the palatinate team with fantastic tries from Ali Neden, the Cardiff side were clinical in the wet conditions, and Durham were forced to accept silver medals following a 27-12 loss.
