Durham 2nd XV vs Nottingham Trent 1st XV

The first few minutes of the match were all Durham, building pressure in the visitor’s half early on. However, about 10 minutes in, completely against the run of play, a floated mid field pass was anticipated and intercepted by a Nottingham Trent centre, running in a try from the half way line. Durham were not phased by this score, and bounced right back with a try out wide from full back Ali Neden following a strong scrum in Nottingham’s 22, Hugo Chambre introducing himself to the visitors with a powerful carry off the back.

Durham started to look like the dominant team, with Neden’s second try coming shortly after the first, the conversion from Jones making the score 12-10. With consistent territory and pressure, the forwards then executed a superb driving maul, with Hamilton diving over the line to score. As half time approached, Durham appeared to have sealed their victory with two more tries, one coming from Picton-Turbervill hitting a hard line off Squirrell and one after an excellent break from Mclean followed by a perfectly weighted miss pass out to Trick, who finished well in the corner. This put the score at 33-10, and a big win looked inevitable. However just before half time, a touch of desperation in defence saw Beese leaving the field to spend ten minutes in the bin and there was a glimmer of hope for Nottingham.

The visitors capitalised straight after half time, coming back to 33-17. But then the Durham backline showed its true colours, with a kick through from Jones, finished off by Neden for his hat-trick. Another chip and chase from Durham put the score at 47-17. Nottingham replied with a commendable finish in the corner, but this was followed almost immediately by another try from Trick after some quick hands from the backs. With captain Stileman’s vocal demand of 55 points, Marsden decided to take up the mantel, galloping down the right wing before stepping inside the fullback and finishing under the posts, leaving the final score at 59-29. A well-deserved and much needed victory for the Durham 2nd XV.
