Durham 2nd XV vs. Loughborough 2nd XV
After a long bus drive down to Loughborough in a swanky new ride with usb charging stations, the 2s arrived.
First points of the game went to Durham with a penalty kick from George Jones after a strong defence against the attrition of the Loughborough phase play followed up by good counter attack.
For the next 20 minutes the sides went back and forth struggling to get any more points on the board until a marauding “shin pads” (Tom Steventon) came through around the side of the maul, promptly issued a yellow card and ten minutes in the bin for his troubles. A penalty was awarded to Loughborough who capitalised using their extra forward to push over for a soft try.
Before the half finished, a dangerous Durham attack looked to threaten for a try but was stopped by illegal play from Loughborough. George Jones slotted another penalty kick taking the score at the end of the first half to 7-6 to Loughborough.
The second half Durham came out flying with all 15 men now back on the field. A solid attack saw Durham push into Loughborough’s 22, where again, illegal play saw Durham receive a penalty. Jake Squirrell and Joe Duffy from a quick tap penalty exploited the retreating Loughborough defence and secured our first try, followed up by a successful conversion from George Jones.
13-7 ahead, Durham continued their pressure with a few good runs from the backline, but struggled to turn them into points. Drawing near the end of the game Loughborough managed to counter ruck twice in their own 22, both after successful Durham attacks, scoring two break away tries.
Final score 21-13 to Loughborough.
