Durham 3rd XV got off to a strong start to the season beating York 1st XV 31-11. This consisted of 5 tries which were scored by George Shiel, Ben Cook, Tristan Rawcliffe, Cal Westaway and then we also had one penalty try. Durham started the game strongly scoring early on with good phase play and then good running patterns allowing George Shiel to go over and score the first try. York managed to fight back quickly after conceding a try and scored a try for themselves. After this York also scored two penalty kicks. This meant the game was now close, We then fought our way back gaining territory on the pitch and being very dominant in the scrums this soon lead to a penalty try being given after a scrum on the 5 metre line. We now had the lead and went back to set up for the restart. Coming to the closing stages of the first half there were two yellow cards to two Durham players the first to Harry hall and minutes later the second to George Essex. Going down to 14 and then 13 players the boys had to work hard in defence to keep the York attack out and even with 13 players the York attack couldn't find a way through. Just before the end of the first half Durham scored another try with Ben Cook scoring. This then took us to the end of the first half with a promising lead. In the second half and Durham being back to a full team the possession was largely with Durham and this allowed for great phases of play which then lead to two more try's for Durham, one from Tristan Rawcliffe and then the final try of the game from Cal Westaway. This then secured the win for Durham, and York had no time to fight back and after a few phases of play York made a mistake under the defensive pressure which lead to a penalty being given Durham's way which ended the game leaving Durham victorious.
