1ST XV Vs. Northumbria: 22-35
After a slow start to the afternoon with the bus journey setting the tone and a wee hiccup over shirts, the boys started the match with energy, speed and accuracy as Jamie Clements scores his first of the season running around his opposite number and beating the last man with ease. A couple of Molloy penalties then gave a little buffer before a turnover scrum and fast ruck play saw the home team pull it back- this could have been the end as injuries swiftly struck to the captain, Dave Spelman, and No.8, Buchan Richardson. The replacements however stepped by to the plate and were stand out performers of the day with Nathaniel Opedo providing a rock base to the scrum and Sam Porter constantly making a nuisance of himself around the park- outstanding work rate from both players.
The first half then continued to go the way of the travelling Palatinates with the sides momentum being typified by a great piece of offloading play involving much of the team seeing the club captain, Harry Thompson, score a well worked try. Although Northumbria continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with their very inventive, abrasive one out style of rugby, the first half truly was Durhams as “Playerlayer” posterboy James Middleton made a siding break straight through the heart of the Northumbrian defence.
Half Time score: 22- 12
The second half saw Northumbria take advantage of increased wind and a depleted bench through injury to score a couple of tries and take the game away from the palatinates.
A Good game of rugby though, great hosts and all look forward to return fixture.
